I bought a Apple Watch in aThrift Shop .
I assumed it was an old model ?
Activation lock prevents pairing .
Should I take it back to second hand store and try to get a refund ?

Yes return it straight away,you won't be able to use an activation locked watch without the assistance of the original owner,and quite possibly it might be a stolen watch.
