How do I format a single character as superscript in an Excel for Mac text cell?

How do I format a single character as superscript in an Excel cell formatted for text (such as kg2 where the 2 is a superscript character)? When I tried to format just the character in the entry field it formats all of the text to superscript.

I found a response that said to edit the field and put the cursor before the character you want to superscript (or subscript).

  • Press Option + Enter and split the entry into 2 lines.
  • Highlight the character(s) you want to superscript and right click.
  • Check the superscript box.
  • Place the cursor back in front of the superscripted character(s)
  • Hit backspace to delete the new line
