Data transfer with Thunderbolt cable

Hi everyone,

I have a mac book pro 2011 with a display port and I recently bought a new mac book pro with Thunderbolt 3 port. I would like to transfer some data and files to my new mac, but is there a way to connect the two via cable (thunderbolt 3 to display port or thunderbolt 3 to usb 2.0)? I know I could use migration assistant but by doing this it makes copy the library as well which i dont need and want to transfer over. Any advice about what to do?thanks a Lot

You need this adapter plus a Thunderbolt 2 cable:

Your 2011 MBP actually has a Thunderbolt 2 port (which does double-duty as a MiniDisplayPort for video).
