Desktop Files Hidden Automatically

This is driving me up the wall now after a fruitless search on google and in the community there doesn't seem to be a simple answer or fix unless i'm missing something completely obvious.

I have files on my desktop which for some unknown reason have randomly hid themselves. I can unhide them, kind of, with the CMD+Shift+. button presses BUT they remain washed out so I can click them but clearly still hidden and they revert after a few mins.

What this means is when I want to, say add an image saved from one of these folders in powerpoint, I CONSTANTLY have to use the above button commands to show the files and then click then.

Some points

  • I've tried using terminal and the CH Flags command... no dice
  • It's got nothing to do with iCloud whats-so-ever i've followed multiple instructions ion this one and can safely say it's not iCloud
  • Tried in safe mode, same thing
  • Nothing in Finder preferences changes this.

It's a constant thing that when I create a file on my desktop it hides it automatically. There MUST be a simple way to stop this as it's ridiculous. Does anyone know a simple way of fixing this? I'm not downloading a third party app as that shouldn't be the solution to a MacOs issue.

Use TextEdit to edit your .hidden file while booted in safe mode. That will allow you to manage what's hidden on your system.

Keep in mind, there are files which are purposely hidden like the three letter folder names at the root of the hard drive. These are operating system folders, which if modified in anyway will in fact increase the instability of the system.
