Apple Watch doesn't connect to WiFi automatically

Hi all,

i have a problem with my AppleWatch 4 (WatchOS 8.7) and WiFi. My watch does not connect to my WiFi when my iPhone is not nearby. When I am walking around in my home, I don't want to carry around my iPhone all the time, but still get noticed from my AppleWatch. This is not working. My watch is showing a sign on the top of the screen that my iPhone is not reachable. When I check the WiFi setting on my watch, I can see, that it is not connected to my WiFi. When I manual select my WiFi, the watch will connect to it instantly.

I've already turned WiFi off and on on my watch, or ignored the WiFi and set it up again. I also disconnected the watch from my iPhone at set it up again. This didn't helped. I can't remember that this worked in the past, so I think this is not related to any WatchOS version.

What I also noticed is, that it worked, when I turned off private WiFi addresses. But unfortunately this option is turned on automatically after a while. My iPhone WiFi connection works perfect although private WiFi addresses is turned on.

Do you have any idea to troubleshoot this problem or even fix it?

Thanks,

Tobias

Hello tukane,

We can understand wanting to have your Apple Watch connect or stay connected to your Wi-Fi network when you're not near your iPhone. Is the Wi-Fi you're attempting to connect to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network? If it's not, this may be the cause of your issue.

Your Apple Watch can connect to a Wi-Fi network:

- If your iPhone, while connected to your watch with Bluetooth, has connected to the network before.
- If the Wi-Fi network is 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz (or 5 GHz if you have Apple Watch Series 6).

When your Apple Watch connects to a compatible Wi-Fi network instead of your iPhone connection, the Wi-Fi icon  appears in Control Center.

Your Apple Watch won't connect to public networks that require logins, subscriptions, or profiles.

You can view this information and more here: About Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular on your Apple Watch - Apple Support.

Also, look over this page with details on how to Connect your Apple Watch to Wi-Fi - Apple Support.

We hope this helps you out.

Cheers!
