Unable to install latest Monterey, free space not registering.

The install is saying I ned an add'l 11.74 gb of space, with 13.97gb available. Actually checking the disk space shows that it has 47.84gb avail, NOT 13.97. I tried step #1, calling it names, but that didn't work. Any suggestions?

If I am reading from the image supplied correctly - the Internal Drive has a Total Capacity of 250.69 GB

It is also showing that 234.91 GB are used the difference being 16 GB of available Empty Space.

In this instance some serious house cleaning will be needed to be done.

It is suggested to keep at least 15%  to 20% of the Drive Total Capacity as Empty Space for good operations of the computer and for additional updates to Monterey to download, expand and install.

Notation - If the user is using a cloning software like Carbon Copy Cloner - suggest tweaking the Safety Net Feature in this software. It may be making addition Snap Shots that are not being Cloned to the Eternal Drive. If this should be the case, these Snap Shot could be using additional space on the drive

The final word from Apple on Managing the " Other/ System Data “ Category

Other / System Data: Contains files that don’t fall into the categories listed here. This category primarily includes files and data used by the system, such as log files, caches, VM files, and other runtime system resources. Also included are temporary files, fonts, app support files, and plug-ins. You can't manage the contents of this category. The contents are managed by macOS, and the category varies in size depending on the current state of your Mac.

If you look closely, the "33.89GB" of space is listed as "purgeable" which means macOS will free it up at some point. Obviously something is preventing that so far.

Sometimes just rebooting the Mac can help to free up some space. You can also try booting into Safe Mode which can delete some temp & cache files which have built up since the last reboot. Also, anti-virus apps, cleaning apps, and third party security software tend to interfere with the normal operation of macOS and these types of apps are not needed on a Mac so if you are running them, uninstall them by following the developer's instructions.

Have all your backups completed successfully? And have you installed all the macOS updates for the current version of macOS? macOS now utilizes APFS snapshots which may still contain the data you have already deleted. Usually macOS will delete a snapshot once the backup has been transferred to a external media. You can try checking to see if any APFS snapshots exist which you can delete, although keep in mind if the backup has not yet transferred to the external media, any changes pending to the backup will be destroyed which may mean you could lose important files/data if you accidentally deleted or changed something which has not yet been transferred to the external backup media.

If you check out the left image, you can see the display of the disk itself, showing it has 47gb available. When I go to About this mac, it shows the disk w. 47gb available. Unless I can determine why the install monterey isn't synching with the OS itself re: available storage, it won't help to free up add'l space. Thanks for the links though, I saved that data for future reference.

No matter what I did it wouldn't register the new avail storage. I never would have thought that it would cache the avail space when the OS was downloaded but as an experiment I removed the Install and re-downloaded it then tried again. It automatically selected the boot disk as a target, I confirmed, and it installed. Well, it installed after a weird glitch. Even though it had supposedly downloaded the new version it wouldn't finish the install boot unless it had an active network connection. Very weird. At this point even though I've been using Macs for years I'm thinking it's going the route of Winblows and adding extraneous items/functions hidden from the OWNERS of the computers. At any rate, thanks for responding. And thanks again for the helpful links.
