Is there a way to force airplay to mirror the screen instead of switching to full screen video casting mode?

Lots of things break with airplay casting mode (but would work in screen mirroring mode): youtube app subtitles, mirroring directly to portable device that lets you connect to it as a wifi access point, youtube app playlists, picture-in-picture, etc.

Is there a way to make the phone just keep mirroring instead of switching to the video casting mode when you start playing a video or open a photo in the photos app etc.?
