Printer WI-FI direct issues with MacBook Pro 2022

My daughter is in college and has a Macbook Pro 2022 and is using WI-FI direct to print to a Hp 3700 printer. Today it all of a sudden would not print. We went through and did the reset on the printer as Apple suggest, then added the printer back. We checked to make sure the Wifi Direct was turned on, cycled it on/off. We restarted her Macbook Pro and the printer and still did not have any luck. After she readded the the printer back after the reset she showed it offline. She connected to it and had a green light but was showing idle. When she found it on the Wifi and tried connecting to it she never could. Her friend is in the same dorm room and has a Macbook as well and she also can not print to it anymore but using a Chrome Book they can!!!

Can someone please give some further advice on this? Thanks in Advance!

Hi,

Do you mean an HP DeskJet 3700 All-In-One Printer series printer? If so, this model supports the AirPrint technology (About AirPrint - Apple Support). It is compatible with macOS, and can be used without additional drivers, provided that the printer and the Mac computer are connected to the same network (subnet, Wi-Fi router). AirPrint allows printing from an iPad or iPhone as well (Use AirPrint to print from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support).

Would it be correct to assume that it is not possible/permitted to connect the printer to an existing network, and that therefore Wi-Fi Direct is used? A direct Wi-Fi connection (without a router) may require special software, and has some other limitations.

Is a special Mac app used, such as HP Smart? Printer drivers?

In case of continued difficulties with a direct Wi-Fi connection, a workaround could possibly be to use a small "travel router" (TP-Link TL-WR902AC is just one example), which would create a local/private Wi-Fi network.

Add a printer to your printer list so you can use it on Mac – Apple Support (UK)

Reset the printing system on your Mac to solve a problem – Apple Support (UK)

Hello,

Yes, I was talking about the HP DeskJet 3700 All-In-One Printer series printer. To use Air Print you have to have the printer connected to the WiFi and she can not connect her printer to the public WiFi in the Dorm or everyone else will start printing to her printer.

Using WiFi direct you are connecting straight to the printer and no software or apps are required. It is very simple and was working before.

Thanks
