According to Finder, when I highlight all of my Applications and hit "Get Info" it says only 5.8 GB on disk. However, in "Storage Management" the Applications section says 172 GB (!!!) in use. Can anyone explain what might be going on here?

It may be making addition Snap Shots that are not being Cloned to the Eternal Drive. If this should be the case, these Snap Shot could be using additional space on the drive

Where exactly are you seeing these numbers? Which app specifically?
I don't think you can get an aggregate usage figure by doing what you're doing. When I select all my apps, and click Get Info, each opens separately: one info window per app.
Thanks, I used Grand Perspective and figured it out. Turns out Library/Application Support under my home directory was the culprit. One of my previous applications downloaded a ton of data under there. It seems like the Storage Management app includes that as part of the Application disk usage. The problem is you would never know it because you remove the app and storage stays.
It was Bitcoin Core! I downloaded and only ran it for a few minutes but it somehow managed to download about 150gb of blockchain data. It must have run something in the background and I didn’t realize it.
