I'm a carpenter and I guess sawdust has gotten in the charging port as I carry the phone in a pocket. It takes more than a few charging plug insertions to get it to start charging.
How can I clear the port area, besides taking it in for repair??

Take an unused toothbrush and gently clean out the port. A toothpick will also work. The key word is gently.
As a carpenter, do you have access to compressed air? Once you have loosened up the sawdust with a toothbrush, blow it out with compressed air.
