Getting to my MAC Mail account

This is kinda frustrating. I'm trying to sign into iCloud, have new password, get a code to my phone - all good - but next step it sends a code to my xxxxx@mac.com email. I have never used this as an actual email account and do not believe I have access to it without successfully signing into iCloud - which I cannot do without the code. Catch 22? What gives?
