Kernel Panics

My late 2013 Macbook Pro was running Mojave without major issues, so I decided to update it to Big Sur, starting with an update to Catalina, in order to run some modern software. With Catalina installed I was getting repeated shutdowns, without warning, within a minute or two of startup.

After a lot of flailing around which I don't think I can adequately describe, I have wound up with a Big Sur installation that is stable in Safe Mode, but crashes in normal mode.

My only thought as to why this might have happened is that there are quite a few remnants of 32 bit software lying around, plus a complete Photoshop CS6, which I haven't yet tried to expunge because I know a cool workaround that might get it running.

Note, I in no way claim to be smart.

Unable to back up to Time Capsule, but managed to format and back up to an external HD using Time Machine.
Erased computer disk, reinstalled Big Sur, and backup. This took nearly 24 hours as the computer repeatedly seemed to complete reinstallation of OS, then shut down and remained unresponsive until I booted it and began again the process of installing OS.
Applying backup from external HD was relatively painless.
First Aid reports disks appear ok.
I now have a computer that is pretty stable in safe mode, but shuts down almost immediately after startup in normal mode.
I'm beginning to think this may be beyond me.

That was a great deal of work done and commendations for that.

As I see it - the format of internal drive and re-installation of Big Sur may have worked had the user ( you ) stopped at that point.

Restoring from a Time Backups backup >> when the existing issues were on the computer << has just re-introduced the existing issues back into the otherwise pristine and virginal installation of Big Sur

This effectively negated all the hard work and time you have done.

To avoid this happening again would to only Restore the Set account and nothing more, no Applications etc and reinstall all needed applications new and fresh directly from the Application Developers.

Thank you for being proactive and suppling the very useful Etrecheck Report up front 👍.

Below are some important information that bears your attention

Major Issues:

Q -  Kernel panics - This system has experienced kernel panics. This could be a sign of hardware failure.

A - Would immediately make a TM Backup and if possible a second on a Separate Drive

A - Should that be the case - would suggest having the machine Evaluate by the Apple Professionals

Minor Issues:

Q -   High battery cycle count - Your battery may be losing capacity.

Q - Battery: Health = Normal - Cycle count = 1225

A - Batteries are considered Consumable Products. Over time it will degrade to a point where it needs to be replaced. The usage is normal as the capacity will go up and down all the time and never stay always at 100%. Apple Batteries are rated for 1000 Full Battery Cycles and / or 80% Capacity before needing Evaluation or replacement.

Q -  Clean up - There are orphan files that could be removed.

A -  Self Explanatory

Q -  Unsigned files - There are unsigned software files installed. These files could be old, incompatible, and cause problems. They should be reviewed.

A - This could be a contributor factor to the System Crashes especially as later in this reply, a certain Application is attempting to Open the “ Sealed and Read Only Volume “ were Big Sur is residing

I have an update. Removed all traces that I could find of obsolete or broken software (including Photoshop) to find computer still shuts down shortly after startup but no longer logs a kernel panic.

Tried checking my disks with Disk Utility and got the following message for Apple SSD SM0512F:

"Problems were found with the partition map which might prevent booting. Couldn't mount disk. (-69842)"

This sounds promising as the source of the problem. Do I have to format?

I should add that the shutdowns still only occur in normal mode. Safe mode is painful but fairly stable.

I suppose I should give another update.

Oops, sorry. I failed to mention that the Time Machine restoration (using Migration Assistant, as It declined to work otherwise) had to be carried out in safe mode because the problem persisted in the intermediate condition with the OS installed on a freshly formatted hard drive.

You might wonder in that case why I bothered to continue with the backup; it was because this gives me my computer in a state that I can at least get some limited utility out of in safe mode, and to see if it worked.

I've been trying to give a complete and clear description of my problem, I'm sorry I screwed the last post up a bit.

A final report might be in order. I took it to iCare in Mega Bangna, Bangkok. They are the authorised Apple service provider in Thailand. They cautioned that they wouldn't be able to undertake any repairs as parts are no longer available for my late 2013 machine, but were prepared to diagnose the issue for a moderate fee.

Returned it 2 days later saying it had just needed cleaning and was now fine.

It shut down about 5-10 minutes after startup when I got it home. Slower than usual; tricked me.

I give up. Bought a new one.
