Download reinstall Safari 15.6.1

I used software update to install Safari 15.6.1. I think there might have been a problem with the installation process. How can I reinstall this version, which now does not show up in software update?

Safari is too often running very slowly loading a page despite Internet speed at 340 mbps. Computer is forcing a restart; and generating a report to send to Apple. Twice already today.

Have you tried restarting the computer? Are you running any anti - virus programs? Using a VPN?

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer or by using the developer’s uninstall instructions. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Safe Mode - About.

If necessary, do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart). Run Disk Utility and select First Aid. Then re-install the OS.

Reinstall from macOS Recovery.

At this point I'm happy to report that it appears the issue has resolved. The surprising solution: after 3 or 4 crashes yesterday an alter warned me that there was insufficient storage to run applications. The computer has 16 GB of RAM, so perhaps it was referring to SSD storage. After deleting some unneeded apps and data file, the computer is not misbehaving!

Eric,

Thanks for the detailed guidance!

I've restarted several time, including after running the Cocktail utility. Today I was trying to get to a webpage via Safari and the computer suddenly restarte on its own.

No VPN, anti-virus. I cycle through 6 backups (SuperDuper) plus Time Machine. I would certainly backup before following your directions.

I'll report back. Thanks again!

David

PS: I would buy a new Mac today if there were a new 27" iMac with an M2 processor or perhaps an newly updated Mac Mini. I'm having to wait too long for what I want.
