When I stream via air play, I can’t fast forward the video? It just go back to the beginning.

Started seeing the same issue a few days ago. Only the stop/play commands take effect. Once the video starts playing I cannot skip within the video, rewind or fast forward. Seeing it on iPad and iPhone casting to a Samsung TV. Clearly Airplay has been broken somehow.

I've reset everything, even upgraded the phone to iOS 16. No luck.

I've been carrying out some testing and have come to the conclusion it depends on which site/video player you are using! This is the same whether I cast to an AppleTV or my LG TV, the results are the same. All running the latest IOS from my iPhone 11 Pro and Ipad Pro 12.9", gen 5.

If I use IMDB trailers and use Airplay to my LG TV and/or AppleTV I can fast forward and rewind without any issues at all. If I try other sites/video players, for example Apple trailers, https://trailers.apple.com/trailers/paramount/top-gun-maverick/ I can't fast forward/rewind without the Airplay jumping backwards to the beginning.

So there is a problem, but is it Apple's Airplay that's the problem, or the website's/client video player that is the cause of the problem!?

While I appreciate AzizAlmarji's work-around, it's frustrating that this issue is now marked "Solved"!! It is definitely NOT solved. I have a variety of Apple devices... AppleTV's (4K, 4K Gen2, HD), TV's w/Airplay 2 support (Samsung Frame, Sony Bravia), iPhone XS, iPad Pro, MacBook Pro (2020), this Airplay problem appears to happen between ALL devices! (ALL devices are on the latest firmware/software.)

Frustrating that this has gone on for 2 months now, and NOTHING from Apple, not even recognition that the problem exists.

OK more testing results. I believe this issue is a mixture of browser and TV, so maybe not an Apple issue.

If I take a given trailer website, https://www.marvel.com/movies/black-panther-wakanda-forever and play the trailer using Google Chrome, casting Airplay from my iPhone and/or iPad Pro to my LG CX65 TV, Fast Forward/Rewind don’t work properly, jumping back to the start of the trailer.

If I try the same URL but use Safari, casting Airplay from iPhone/iPad Pro to the same LG TV, then Fast Forward/Rewind work correctly!

If I try the same above tests but Airplay to my Apple TV box, rather than my LG CX65, then Airplay works correctly from both browsers!!

So you would immediately think it’s a Google Chrome issue, but hang on….If I change the source of the Video to use this link https://trailers.apple.com/trailers/apple/spirited/ and try the above tests again the results change again! If I cast Airplay using Google Chrome or Safari to my LG CX65, neither option allows Fast Forward/Rewind to work! If I cast to my Apple TV box then both browsers work correctly with Fast Forward and rewind.

So is the problem with Google Chrome, or the TV!? Feels like there is some issue on the Google Chrome side and also on the TV side.

Yes I think everybody had the same issue around August, and still no problem-fix from @Apple. A temporary solution: go to settings>general>airplay & handoff>automatically airplay to TVs>never. Now you can mirror your video and fully control it from your iPhon or iPad (fast forward, rewind, continue watching from where you stopped, etc…) but your device has to be on all the time which is battery consuming.

Hi rommel55,

Thanks for posting in Apple Communities.

For this feature not working with AirPlay, restart if you haven't tried the step already. This is a good general step to take to rule out some types of unexpected behavior.

Also, make sure your iPhone is running the latest software. Be sure to back up beforehand: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

"Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch wirelessly

  1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
  2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
  3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
  4. If you see two software update options available, choose the one that you want to install.
  5. The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 14.8 or iOS 15.
  6. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do."

Also, if you haven't already, turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and re-enable them both. Make sure the receiving device is running the latest firmware.

If the issue persists, let us know the app you're using when you're streaming video.

Regards.

This problem is still NOT FIXED. It affects LITERALLY ALL apple devices which use Air Play, and all devices which RECEIVE THE SIGNALS (including like Samsung devices).

You can no longer fast forward / rewind, or skip to a time in when Air Playing a video from an apple device (computer or phone) to a television.

Apple broke this with their August updates to macOS and iOS. They need to acknowledge and fix this.

Interesting that you found something that DOES work. When I discovered the issue one day, I went to a variety of sites/providers (including… APPLE) and experienced the same issue across all. So unless the variety of providers are all sharing underlying software/infrastructure that ALL changed at the same time, I still expect it’s an Apple issue to acknowledge and resolve.

Still… silence. Nothing.

I can no longer sing praises of the Apple ecosystem or purchase Apple products (e.g. AppleTV’s) for myself or holiday gifts. Such a shame when a strong company starts losing it.

The issue has nothing to do with Google Chrome. I do not use Google Chrome, and I have this issue. I stream from my MacBook Pro 14 (M1 / Apple Silicon). Things worked fine as of July 20 (macOS Monterey v12.5). I don't recall if I upgraded to 12.5.1 and then 12.6, or straight to 12.6, but the problems started occurring with one of those two macOS updates.

I'm using the same laptop, on the same TV (a Samsung 7 Series; the software on this has NOT been updated), and Safari browser. Regardless of what site I use (Netflix, Youtube, or any other video site), I can NOT fast forward, rewind, or skip. And regardless of which TV I use, or even if I stream to an appleTV box, I still can not fast forward / rewind / skip.
