External USB's are appearing as "Internal Physical Volume"

If you are connecting these drives directly to the USB ports on the Mac or via a hub or adapter, try connecting them directly and retesting. How to use safe mode on your Mac offers steps to test this behavior in safe mode and how to proceed based on the results of that test:

1. "Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac. 
3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window."

macOS sometimes gets confused. I've even seen some third party internal SSDs appear as external drives complete with the orange icon. I know something with the drive or the drive's firmware may have something to do with this. I doubt there is anything you can do about it. Does it really cause any problems?
