External USB's are appearing as "Internal Physical Volume"

Whenever I plug anything in one of the two USB ports on my 2011 MBP it always appears as "USB Internal Physical Volume". I've tried several USB keys and have tried reformatting them to different configurations but to no avail. Any help on getting it to be recognized as external storage would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi bdawg514,

If you are connecting these drives directly to the USB ports on the Mac or via a hub or adapter, try connecting them directly and retesting. How to use safe mode on your Mac offers steps to test this behavior in safe mode and how to proceed based on the results of that test:

  1. "Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
  3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window."

Regards.
