Non-Apple Mouse lag on Mac Mini

I've read through a million "lagging mouse" inquires/responses, but most seem to address bluetooth connections and CPU task % issues (so I have tried to research quite a bit).

Details of issue:

  • This is regular wireless mouse (not an Apple Magic Mouse)
  • There is no lag after I reboot, but within a few hours of use, it will always go back to lagging
  • Tried with new wireless mouse and then again with a new wired mouse, but same result
  • Not runnng anything extreme on the Mac Mini -- only using browser window (no other software) and limited peripherals (backup drive, printer, wired keyboard, wired mouse, speakers, monitor) -- the peripherals do go through a USB hub.
  • The Mac Mini has performed well to date and the issue started ~2 months ago.
  • Mac Mini M1 2020 running Monterey 12.5.1 (verified no updates currently to install)

As rebooting solves the issue temporarily, I simply reboot each day before I use it. I gladly welome any thoughts -- TIA!

Mac mini, macOS 12.5

You can try a reset to factory followed by manual re-install of programs and manual copy of your data (avoid TS backups entirely as they may have the corruption too).

It sounds like a lot of work but really isn’t, may even be enjoyable, a good chance to review and throw away the old. Ideally all your programs should be from the App Store. If they aren’t, re-install them last after the mouse/kb is properly operating.

Start by copying over user data to external disk, then reset to factory per instructions here Erase all content and settings on Mac - Apple Support. Good luck!

  1. The first mouse which I've used forever was "Amazon Basics Wireless Computer Mouse with USB Nano Receiver". I had used this mouse for years with my previous Mac Mini, which was replaced with this 2020 model. And again, this mouse worked perfectly up to ~2 months ago.
  2. As I thought the mouse may be the issue (old, dirty), I replaced it with "Amazon Basics Ergonomic Wireless PC Mouse - DPI adjustable - Black" and bought a replacement mouse pad as well (just in case). Experienced the same stutter/lag with on using this mouse...but again, it repairs itself temporarily with a machine reboot.
  3. Then bought a wired mouse to see if the issue was related to using a USB jumper (though no changes in my desk area). The wired mouse was a "TECKNET 6-Button USB Wired Mouse with Side Buttons, Optical Computer Mouse with 1000/2000DPI, Ergonomic Design, 5ft Cord, Support Laptop Chromebook PC Desktop Mac Notebook-Grey" (purchased on Amazon).

The Mac Mini sits on the desk and is 12" from the mouse (no physical interference, but using the wired mouse proves this).

Using the same monitor as I've used forever (with the previous Mac Mini and this 2020 Mac Mini).

The stuttering occurs both left-to-right and up-and-down (probably not relevant, but wanted to mention).

I don't play games or have any heavy software computer use....just use it for internet browser applications (e.g., browser windows, Spotify) and Excel is typically started.

The issue is so odd to me as it's always remedied temporarily with a reboot. So it seems like something happens on a reboot that makes everything work perfectly for a day or so...then the pointer goes back to stuttering until the machine is rebooted. So 2 things come to mind... 1. It's like the machine clears something out of memory(?) that allows the mouse to work, but eventually that memory(?) gets clogged and then the stuttering starts.

2. Could it be related to the computer going to sleep...hence why it starts stuttering a "a day later" (after it wakes up).

I have done as suggested and for the 2 ports in the Mac Mini, now using the USB hub and backup device. Then on the 4-port hub are my wired keyboard, mouse jumper, travel scanner, and printer. But again, up to ~2 mo's ago, all was working fine (had been for years). So it would seem something has changed on the computer that has caused it?!? And it's something that fixes itself on re-boot...but then looses that "fix" once the computer goes to sleep.

As suspected...rebooted yesterday and all worked great....then wake computer up today, and mouse is back to stuttering. Just to add another random note: if I move the mouse real slow, there's no suttering....but when move at regular speed, it stutters (graphically can't keep it...so skips forward per se).

To your questions:

  1. The USB Hub: Sabrent 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub with Individual LED Power Switches (HB-UM43)
  2. The Backup: WD MyBook for Mac (let me know if more info needed)

Probably won't help, but will mention....

Last night the mouse was acting horrible...so when I was done working, I clicked to restart the machine and walked away for the night. It's now 7:30p the next night and it's the first time I've been on it since last night, thought it's been "on" since last night (albeit asleep). And the mouse is now working perfectly -- so again, that reboot was able to "reset" it...but it will only stay good temporarily.

Not sure if relevant, but sharing whatever comes to mind...

Once the mouse starts to stutter....and then the computer goes asleep at night....and is then woken up the next day, the stuttering will continue. So on that last post, had I not rebooted the computer, when I got on the computer tonight, it would have been still stuttering. So "going to sleep" and "waking up" doesn't remove the stuttering (only rebooting).

What USB Hub are you using?

(brand, model, bus or self-powered)

What backup drive?

(brand, model, bus or self-powered)

I would try removing the backup drive from the Hub and plug it directly into one of the Mac mini's ports.

Maybe I should also add that I tried taking the wired mouse (no jumper) direct to the Mac Mini (not thru the hub) and that didn't remedy the issue. That's I lean toward being hardware (inside the Mac) or software related -- vs related to the ancillary items (mouse, hub, etc)...or it seems a direct connect wired mouse would work. That said, seems odd a reboot would consistently "fix" it...vs being a chronic problem that reboot wouldn't remedy.
