Any way to track stolen iPhone 4 without having previously installed an app

Hi, I've had my iPhone 4 stolen.

I've not got a mobile me subscription, (but I'd buy one if it meant I could track the phone?) and haven't installed any third party tracking app either.

Is there any way it could be tracked? It seems silly that my network can send a shutdown signal, to essentially "brick" the phone unless it's recovered, but can't have the device report it's location...

Thanks.

Thanks ZEO1128. However, mobileme was not activated on my iphone even though I did install it. I encountered some problems the last time i installed it (unable to verify) and had not fix the problem yet. Now the the phone is stolen. Happened in Singapore (during my vacation here) and the Singapore police officer asked to provide IMEI number. I'm just wondering how it will be blocked because phone is registered from Malaysia.

My son just lost his iphone tonight. He realized he lost it and was able to retrace his steps within the first 30 minutes of loosing it. He called me and I logged on to mobile me and tried to find it. The mobile me website reported back that location services are disbaled.

His phone was locked with a passcode and I find it hard to believe someone got in the phone that quick and turned it off. There has been no phone activity since the phone was lost.

If someone removed the SIM card would that disable the location services?

Any help or advise would be appreciated. Thanks

I would hope that people would realize that this is the case in almost all situations. Too many times do people sit idly by and not secure their stuff, and then when they go missing, they get angry at those who made the devices for not providing a security system to go along with the device FOR FREE.

It wouldn't necessarily be a "FREE" security system... Think about how much the mobile device itself costs.

Without Contract - $449 (8GB), $649 (16GB), or $749 (32GB). (Prices located bottom of page here http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone)

Add $100 to whichever GB version you buy for Apple's Mobile Me plan... Sounds like Monopoly to me. And apple is the banker. haha.

"MobileMe" is not accepting new subscribers due to the transition to iCloud.

Irrelevant to your statement that someone had to pay the $100 subscription charge. Find My iPhone will be at no additional for iPhone 4, iPad and 4th-generation iPod touch users under iCloud as well.

Also 3GS models are still being produced? Yes

Also irrelevant to this thread; the OP had an iPhone 4.

Hey Dave,

I lost my iphone yesterday in India. It has been switched off since then. I had the find my iphone app installed on it. I am sure that the theif is going to use a new sim card to turn it on ( which can be any out of 10-12 operators). Is the find my iphone app going to work in background in that case also? If not, can you give some help on how it can be tracked only using IMEI number? I am pretty sure he is not going to figure out soon how to turn it on, cut the sim (micro-sim is not available easily).

Thanks.

Having the app installed does nothing to aid tracking. That is only for locating another device from yours.

You need to have configured a free "Find my iPhone" MobileMe account (or a paid account) in the Settings for Find my iPhone to have a chance at working. Deleting the "Find my iPhone" app will not stop the phone from being tracked as long as the account is setup correctly, location services is turned on, the phone has power and an internet connection.

You can't track the phone via IMEI number.
