How can I recover .icloud files?

Is there any way to recover files with the ".icloud" at the end? I passed all my work to a cloud and now I can't access my previous work because of the terminal. This really sucks because I made sure all my work was downloaded and now I've lost it.

Is there any way around it?

The files look like this:

Files with a .iCloud extension are placeholders for the actual file and cannot be opened. Those usually appear when you try to copy or move a file that is in iCloud but not on the computer at that time. You’ll want to check iCloud.com to see if the file still exists
