If it is an older iPad, you will not be able to directly attach a flash drive. You will need a flash drive reader that attaches to the connector you have, probably Lightening Connector. I have an older one that was made by San Disc.
I've just checked. Apple sells card readers to be used by iPads. You can check the online store by clicking on iPad in the black strip at top of any forum page.
