Apple TV is not intended to connect to Mac through HDMI. It doesn’t work that way. The HDMI port on Apple TV is HDMI-out. The HDMI connection on Mac (via adapter) is HDMI-out, not HDMI-in.

I have an older iMac with USB-C and the older Thunderbolt ports (Mini DisplayPort ). I would like to use it as a monitor for an Apple TV, but I didn't know if there was anyway to input the audio and video from the Apple TV to the iMac. I don’t use the iMac as a computer anymore, but it would make a nice, sharp display.
You comment about the HDMI was helpful, because I image the Mini DisplayPort is output only, too.
Bottom line, the answer is no, you cannot use the iMac as a display monitor for the Apple TV. What you are referring to was called “Target Display Mode” and the Apple TV has never supported it. Sorry
