Dunno.. pretty much any external storage drive should work as long as it has a usb-c/thunderbolt 3 port and is Mac Formatted, which you can do in Disk Utility. Ssd’s ( solid state devices) will be faster then conventional hard drives for pretty much everything… their only disadvantages are cost and storage capacity… they top out at around 4TB usually… and the cost would be… $229 US for a 1TB ssd, $399 for a 2TB SSD.. vs a 7200 RPM conventional HD 1TB for $129.. my Mac “crystal ball” ( or magic 8-ball if you prefer) says that your MacBook Pro 2016 came with either 512 gigs or 1TB of internal storage on an SSD… and certain models/years of Macbooks Pro and Macbooks do have internal storage that is upgradeable if you were to take it to an AASP ( apple authorized service provider) and have them do it for you… others, well, no, as the ssd would be directly soldered to the logic board, same with the RAM, not upgradeable.. there should be a model number on your MacBook pro from 2016 either on the outside somewhere or under “”about this Mac”, starts with an “A” then 4 numbers… typing that model number in the search part of everymac.com will tell you if it is or isn’t upgradeable…i’d recommend you buy from a reputable vendor such as OWC… having an external drive is good and smart because all drives will fail eventually, including the one inside your MacBook pro from 2016… so you could ( and should) use it as a backup drive… better safe than sorry, right ? Setting up and using “time machine “ ( which is built in the mac os) for backing up couldn’t be easier and it’s automatic..

Maybe you could tell us what you mean with an external drive being required for an upgrade or update? You are already running the latest OS.
If you need empty storage space, most any external drive will do. A regular spinning drive is fine for Time Machine if you want to make a backup.
