I just bought my son the 9th gen ipad for his birthday. The front/FaceTime camera is such bad quality. It’s so grainy it’s almost unusable. I had webcams back in college in the early 2000s that had better quality than this! Is there something wrong with the hardware possibly or is it supposed to be this bad? My son was pretty disappointed with how bad the camera quality was. I felt bad 😞

Whilst the front camera of your iPad has a higher pixel count (24MP) than many other iPad models, the ultra-wide camera lens reduces the effective resolution.
The ultra wide front camera features Centre Stage, designed to mimic pan and zoom in software; however digital cropping of the image exaggerates the lower effective resolution.
Digital cropping inevitably produces a lower quality image, this being a fundamental limitation of this camera technology - regardless of manufacturer.

Have a look here: iPad (9th generation) - Technical Specifications. The FaceTime camera is a 12MP Ultra Wide camera and ƒ/2.4 aperture.
