iPhone calendars unable to connect to connect to internet

The title says it all. I have gone through many steps and suggestions on the internet. Nothing works and most are geared toward syncing problems. I can’t even get to the syncing step because when I try to refresh my calendars, I get the pop up error message that calendars cannot connect to internet.
