Apple Watch pairing

I have an older version of the series 3 Apple Watch that I’ve had for a while. But at some point after my phone updates my watch stopped working. Someone told me to reset my watch and try re-pairing it. So now my watch is on factory reset and when I try to pair it back to my phone it says it needs to be updated first and when I try to update the watch on my phone it says it’s not connected to wifi. My phone is but idk how to connect my watch to wifi while it’s in factory reset. I went through all the trouble shooting steps and it still says the same thing.Anyone know how to fix this or do I just need a new watch?
