Public playlists - restricting access

Hello! I’m waiting today to share my child’s experience with Apple Music and to seek a solution to prevent it from happening again.

I was alerted to an issue when I saw 2 unfamiliar contacts on my 12-year old child’s iPhone. I learned that they’d been communicating with others (strangers) via public playlists. I learned that individuals are using the playlist title or other editable fields to identify another user by username, and share messages and personal contact information.

I want to restrict access to user-created public playlists, specifically, but cannot find a way to do it. I do not want to restrict playlists created by Apple or other Apple-sanctioned methods, just rando users. Can you advise?

Thank you!

Hello Four5Six,

Being able to restrict applications and features on your child's device is important and you've come to a great place for help! While it's not possible to restrict specific playlists or public playlists, you can set restrictions for allowed contacts your child can communicate with, along with additional restrictions that may help achieve your desired goal. To set up Family Sharing, follow the steps listed below. You can also find these steps in the following article.

  1. "Go to Settings.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Family Sharing, then tap Set Up Your Family.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions to set up your family and invite your family members."

Set up Family Sharing

Once set up, you can set Communication Limits in Settings > Screen Time, tap Continue if prompted, followed by your child's device, then tap Communication Limits. You can learn more about Communication Limits and other restrictions via the link below.

Use parental controls on your child's iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
