Apple Mail crashes right after it opens. Can anybody help via the crash reports?

I am using a Mid-2009 Macbook Pro, running El Capitan, and about a month ago the Apple Mail app started to crash almost instantly after it opened. Not knowing what to make of the details of the crash, I decided to re-install the OS from a Time Machine backup on an external hard drive.

After that was complete, and I was reset to a few months before the problem started, everything worked fine, again. That lasted between a week or 2, then Mail would crash upon opening as it did before.

After another week or so, I re-installed the OS again, this time from a new backup I created right after the last re-installation, and again Mail worked normally for about a week to 10 days before the same crashing behavior.

Can anyone decipher the details from the crash report, so that there might be something that can fix this problem?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hey there ew719,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. To get started, if having issues with the Mail app on your MacBook closing unexpectedly, give the steps listed below from the following resource a try that can help with troubleshooting this particular issue: If an app on your Mac stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open - Apple Support

1. Quit and reopen the app
Quit the app, then open it again. If the app won't quit, force the app to quit. Then check to see if the problem with the app is fixed.

2. Restart your Mac
Restart your Mac. Then check to see if the problem with the app is fixed.

3. Check for updates
To see if updates are available for the app, open the App Store, then click Updates. If updates aren't available for the app, update the software on your Mac. Or if you didn't get the app from the App Store, look for updates to the app on the app developer's website. Then check to see if the problem with the app is fixed.

4. Reinstall the app
Delete the app. When you do this, you might lose data that was stored in the app. Then redownload the app. If you didn't get the app from the App Store, redownload the app on the app developer's website. Then check to see if the problem with the app is fixed.

If still having issues after going through the steps above, we'd recommend testing the issue in safe mode with the steps in this next resource shown here: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Testing in safe mode can help with determining whether the issue is caused by some software that loads as your MacBook starts up. After testing the issue in safe mode, be sure to go through the additional steps whether the issue does or doesn't occur while in safe mode.

Keep us updated with the results.

Take care!

Hi ew719,

It may also help to isolate this if you test in another user account. That way, you can determine if the issue is isolated to your user account or is system-wide. First, if you do not have another user account to test, set one up using the guidance from Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support.

Then, test the Mail app. If you have multiple email accounts, test individually. This may also be isolated to a certain email account.

If the same continues, it may be best to reach out to Apple Support for help since this is an Apple app.

Take care.

Thanks for the effort Chris_V89

I did all I could do with your suggestions, which was to check for the same condition in Safe Mode, and I got the same results. Any and every attempt to open the Apple Mail app results in it crashing as soon as I see the open Mail window, in regular mode or Safe Mode.

Not sure if you fully read and understood the description of the issue, or if you were able to read and make sense of the "detailed report" I attached to my question, but I have zero understanding of the maybe hundreds of lines of text in the report.

Also, the fact that I am using an older MBP running El Capitan, there are no updates available, and no way to delete or uninstall the Mail app, as it is built in to the OS.

Any other ideas???

Thanks again.
