Is it safe using your full name in your email address?

I understand that a lot of people don’t like using their full name on their email address. People tell me to make an email that doesn’t identify who you are but I never thought about it. All my emails are my full name + my birthday or brithdate, so when people told me that’s not safe. I’m kind of scared now, I think it should be okay right?

Plus, having it my full name just makes it a lot easier to remember. I’ve also sent countless amounts of emails to people/companies, as well as given them my email and nothing bad has ever happened under my name. Also, when you send mail, your display name is your first and last name.

Even on social media, everyone use their full name. So I doubt anything bad can happen because you’re more likely to get hacked on social media than through an email account. But I do feel like they are able to collect personal information about you through an email account. I’m not quite sure though, I have 2 email accounts at the moment, one is inactive and one is active which I use for both professional and personal use. Both of them I’ve had for years, so there’s no way to tell who I’ve sent emails to or given it to. Both also have my full name and nothing bad has ever happen nor have I ever thought of making an email without my full name. Although, now in days, with all these scams and hackers. I’m not even sure if it’s safe to have your full name as your email address.

You're assuming that "Eric Root" is their real name. It may not be.

So if I didn’t put my middle name in my email address, I should be completely fine right? If you ever search up my first and last name on google, you’ll most likely get hundreds of results. Plus I hope that Apple protects our personal information so that they can get any information besides our full name and email address.

I don’t think someone can get personal information just through an email address right?

It's absolutely amazing what personal information people can find out about you with only a few facts. I suspect if you were knowledgeable enough, you could find out a lot about me from my forum name (which is not my real name). And yes, scammers could use your name from your email address to make an email seem more personal in an attempt to trick you into giving them more information. Back when I was a child, most people thought nothing of the fact that their name, address, and phone number were in a book that was in most people's homes and available in public libraries. Was that information sometimes used for nefarious purposes, sure.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it very much. Lots of people use some or all of their name in their email address. Every company I've worked for since companies gave out email addresses used my last name in my company email. But only you can determine your risk tolerance.

Yeah! I’m not too worried about it. When I had to make a professional emails because they were teaching about how to be professional in school. They always told me to use my first and last name. My name is also quite common and I doubt they can commit any frauds or hack into your phone just with your email address and full name. Government security and Apple’s security is quite strict at the moment. Although, I’m not sure about gmails. I feel like google wouldn’t protect us as much as Apple does but need to use gmail. 🤷‍♀️ I think as long as you personal information such as your address or bank information, etc. you should be completely fine right? Plus, if you ever get spam emails with someone pretending to know you, you would obviously block.

I was just trying to get peoples opinion on it because a lot of people say it’s unsafe which scared me for a second. All my email addresses are first.last@mail.com in different variations like I added a couple numbers to it. I’ve never had a problem with the fact that my name is in my email, no one has ever done anything bad to it. Plus it’s a lot less embarrassing compared to the one I made as a kid and I don’t seem like some random suspicious person emailing a company/a person.

Oh! And heads up, when I said “I understand but your display name is already your first and last name.” I was referring to how when you send a email through the mail app, your display name is your first and last name. Sorry for the misunderstanding!

Ah! I understand.

But it doesn't have to be. For your personal email, you can change that.

My personal email is related to my real name in a fairly obvious way. The reason I've never used my real name in my personal email has to do with the fact that, because I can't use the punctuation in my last name, it looks really weird. I've never had a problem. Most spammers aren't especially careful about making emails look real. I suppose if I had an actual stalker or if I was on the lam, I'd pick something different. But, my life, fortunately, is pretty boring.

Haha! I’ve never had a problem with spam emails from hackers. That might be because I never check my emails. I swear probably everyone in this world has my email as I use it for everything. My email is just my first name last name and a couple of numbers because first.last@mail.com was taken. A lot of different variations was as well.

Although, if you did have a stalker, you would obviously inform the police right away and hopes that it all gets resolved. I doubt they can hack into your email that easily but if it were on social media, super easy to hack at the moment. I doubt anyone is dumb enough to click suspicious links from unknown people but who knows at this point, you’re never safe on the internet. I do think most people use their first and last name in their email address as well as the display name. When you’re creating the email address, it basically forces you to add your first and last name at first but of course you can change it in the future. I’m not too worried about this, as long as they don’t have any really personal information about me, I think I should be safe. Hopefully right? Haha
