how to obtain a second phone number and get a dual SIM card

I have an XS Max and need to get a second phone number. Where do I begin? Where do I obtain a second phone number? Do I need to go into my Verizon store? Also, should I wait for the new iPhone, or is my current phone still a workhorse that can support this? Thank you!

Only iPhones that were purchased in Hong Kong, Macau, or China mainland support two physical SIM cards.

Phones purchased elsewhere use an e-SIM. You can do that with an XS Max or wait for a new phone. See the information in About eSIM on iPhone - Apple Support

The following from Verizon may also help. They should be able to get you set up without going into a store. https://www.verizon.com/support/esim/
