Do i have to keep my iphone close by to track swimming correctly?

I'm thinking of buying an apple watch for fitness tracking (mostly pool swimming and later cycling)... Do i need to keep my iphone close by for it to accurately tracking my swimming?

I usually leave my phone in the locker, away from swimming pool.

And what about ocean swimming? would it track my distance and other metrics correctly without having iphone nearby?
