Why does Apple insist on getting PII and financial information to set up an iTunes account?

I want to share my location information with my spouse, which created enough issues to cause him to cancel. He does not have an Apple device.

  1. He was asked for his birth date. I can see confirming you are over 21. Why is anything else needed?
  2. He was asked for a credit card number. Storing this information creates a security risk. Why is it necessary for Apple to have that information unless the owner chooses to share it for convenience?

You can find more information in this discussion. But the main idea comes down to this - there are so many ways to download music, apps, etc, that requiring a credit card on file is necessary. Even the apps that come with a free trial require this in case you forget to cancel the free trial. As for date of birth, some purchases are for adults only. And one of the ways Apple can verify a credit card is with date of birth. I’m nor justifying the requirements … just explaining the why behind Apple’s decision.
