self-signed root certificate

For some reason within the past 10 days the email address I use most frequently goes out with a "self-signed root certificate." Now many of my emails are encrypted rather than coming through as regular text. Apple support has helped me identify how not to use the digital certificate. However, I would like to remove it. None of my other accounts has such a signature. There is also a "private key" as a subset of the digital self-signed root certificate. How do I remove the digital certificate? Can I simply delete it, or will this cause problems?

I would appreciate consult on this issue. Thank you.

Thanks for reaching out, marylu131.

It sounds like you're currently using a personal certificate to encrypt your email, but would like to remove it. We can help.

You can check out the details of personal certificates in the article, Use personal certificates in Mail on Mac. Since these are stored in Keychain, if you'd like to disable the certificate you can Delete a keychain in Keychain Access on Mac:

Delete a keychain:
1. In the Keychain Access app  on your Mac, if your keychains aren’t visible, choose Window > Keychain Access.
2. Select a keychain in the Keychains list.
3. Choose File > Delete Keychain [keychain name].
4. Click Delete References.

This should remove the certificate.

Hope that helps.

Take care.
