Transferring apps to a new iOS device with Quick Start

Answering my own question: All apps seem to be transferred to a new phone with Quick Start, even those no longer available from the App Store. I was pleasantly surprised to make this discovery after setting up a new phone over the weekend. I suppose it's possible that old apps are downloaded from some archival section of the App Store, although it seems more likely that the bits are copied directly from the old phone to the new phone.

Gotta say that this seems wrong. Although these apps probably would have stopped working eventually, I'm pretty sure they would continue to work if I just updated my phone to iOS 16. Just another reminder that although we buy apps, we don't really own them.
