I'm hoping there's an archive somewhere of downloadable, iOS 5.11-compatible, 3rd Generation iPod Touch applications.
I'm not seeing such a place on the App Store (the preferred source, since iStore apps are considered 'safe'.
If there is such an archive somewhere else, how do people know if they're safe, vs. 'infected'?

Don't think there is. Since there is no way to "side load" apps. The only way to install apps is from the App Store.
Any other method of installing apps requires hacking the device to accept apps form other sources which by definition would be unsafe and cannot be discussed in these forums.
I think it's time to update to a newer iPod Touch now.
