iOS 15.7 Update Download Failed

I have an iPad mini 2 that I am trying to update to 15.7. I keep getting “unable to check for update”. I have reset it and erased all settings but I still have the same error message each time.

Has anyone had this issue?

Same issue here, with iPhone 12. This via air, or plugged into a computer and iTunes. Additionally, updating to 16, still indicates a storage issue. Says I need to have at least 1.42GB, but I have 4 GB free.

Skipping the update for now.....after trying for two days!

Whether or not you are able to update any iPad to a newer version of iOS/iPadOS will be dictated by the iPad model - and the currently installed version of iOS. You can find this information here:

Settings > General > About

Not sure which iPad you have? Identify your iPad model.

Here is a list of the highest version of iOS supported by the older models of iPad (for simplicity - “generations” are shortened to a number) that are restricted in their ability to be updated:

iPad1 - iOS 5.1.1

iPad2, iPad3 and iPad mini1 - iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models), iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi & Cellular)

iPad4 - iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only), iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi & Cellular)

iPad Air1, iPad mini2 and iPad mini3 - iOS 12.5.6

Newer models, not appearing in this list, are all able to be updated to the current version, iPadOS 15.7

If your iPad is capable of being updated to a more recent version of iOS/iPadOS than is currently installed, these support pages outline both the available methods by which the update can be performed - and troubleshooting should you experience difficulties:

Update your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch – Apple Support

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch – Apple Support

If your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch won’t update - Apple Support

iOS update and restore errors – Apple Support

Be aware that while an iPad may be capable of update, it may be too far behind the current version to be updated directly from iPad settings. In such circumstances you will likely need to use a computer to perform the update. You will need access to either a PC (with iTunes installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of MacOS). Ensure that your installed version of iTunes has been updated to the most recent version; the essential device drivers are included.

Download and use iTunes for Windows – Apple Support

Update to the latest version of iTunes – Apple Support

Update software on iPhone, iPad or iPod touch in iTunes on PC - Apple Support

If you have a beta profile installed, ensure this has been removed from your iPad - as, otherwise, installation of production software updates may be inhibited. This support page provides the necessary information to remove the beta from your iPad:

How to uninstall iOS beta software - Apple Support

You should note that for your iPad to install an available update, its battery must be charged to at least 50% capacity - and/or be connected to its Power Adapter. Similarly, the iPad can only be updated over a standard WiFi connection - or be updated by a PC or Mac using iTunes or Finder - over a USB connection.

This answer doesn't help - at all. It completely ignores the issue. The statement: "Newer models, not appearing in this list, are all able to be updated to the current version, iPadOS 15.7" simply ignores the fact that most users (me included) are operating with 'newer models' (I have an iPhone 12) and are updated to the latest iOS (which I am - 15.6.1).

The above advice 'sounds good', but again, it completely ignores the glaring issue, which is that most normal users are 'up-to-date', yet they are either getting the above error, or getting what I get - "An error occured downloading iOS 15.7" error notification:

You folks with iphone questions would be better served to make your own threads in the iphone forum instead of tacking onto the original one in the ipad forum.

Phones and iPads do not share the same operating system anymore….it’s very similar but phones run iOS and IPads run iPadOS.

Beyond that try to reboot your phone and see if that helps. Sometimes a reboot helps to clear any temp files that may be causing an issue.

Since there are a couple of other people that also report having issues there could also be something with Apple’s servers and the best thing to do would be to try back in a bit after things are sorted.

As to the storage issue you may also want to unload some apps temporarily. Major updates like this often need space to ‘unpack’ so to speak.

How is my reply missing the point? I have provided specific guidance within my initial reply that provides procedures to address a failing update.

So, if you can provide specific information as to which of the support documents you are following - and where the process fails - additional help may be forthcoming.

You also illustrate a screenshot for iPhone - and not iPad. While much of the guidance I have provided is generic to both iOS and iPadOS platforms, there will be differences.

Sep 14, 2022 8:59 AM in response to LotusPilot

Your reply missed the point by a mile. People with current platforms, indicate an issue, and you reply with a list of older platforms, that can not use IOS 15.7. Same with the other person, who said since we have iPhones, we should post that there.

The 15.7 issue is occurring to updateable IOS platforms, including iPads, iPhones, etc. The platform, is not the issue.

The goal of posting issues is for people to actually provide useful information that they can utilize to get past the problem.

If you don't have a solution....move on.

Sep 14, 2022 9:06 AM in response to jkitchen21

You needn’t be rude.

Experience here tells that many users often post incorrect or incomplete explanation of their issue. In posting a full answer, additional information may herein may ultimately be relevant or might be helpful. Clearly for you this is not the case, but for others searching for solutions to their own issues, may encounter the post - and find information that, for them, is helpful.

As for “moving on”, that’s up to me… not you.

So, I cordially wish you well in finding a solution to your own problem.

Sep 14, 2022 9:16 AM in response to LotusPilot

I was not rude at all. I explained the facts, and if you are offended by the truth, then you have some issues. The issue was clearly explained, and others (me) indicated the attempts of updating via air, WiFi, and via iTunes. This issue is across multiple current platforms.

Others have indicated they have the same issue, with IOS 15.7, and at this time no one has provided any clarity about a solution.

Your comments to date have not helped, and in fact are condescending towards those who have had the issue. Additionally, you've added nothing to this conversation other than to let us know how easily offended you are when people present factual information. Again, move along unless you have something positive and helpful to add in order to help those with the issue.

I’m not offended at all; I don’t have issue at all in volunteering help to those asking for help - but lets back-up here…

The OPs original post (by randall3376) explicitly states having difficulty updating an iPad mini2 - to which my initial reply relates. My reply provided detailed explanation relating to older models iPad, such as the mini2, that cannot updated. Information was also provided additional information in case the iPad model had been misidentified.

You have since hijacked somebody else’s thread, with an unrelated problem - providing an iPhone screenshot. So yes, perhaps is true that the information provided here is of no relevance to you - with your entirely unrelated problem.

I can only suggest that you seek assistance from the iPhone community - and I sincerely wish you well in doing so.

@jkitchen21I had the same issue. Shutdown iphone, waited 5 secs, restarted it and re-downloaded the ios did the trick. I do wish too some errors would be more explicit and I do wish people on the forum would immediately recognize questions asked by noobs and by people who know at least a decent amount of IT stuff to do some self research before posting (battery charged, disk space, eligible update, good coverage, etc.. ) . Currently in Preparing update stage, which it never reached before, so feeling hopeful, see you on the other side!

Sep 14, 2022 10:02 AM in response to jkitchen21

Here we go! Took forever, 30 mins to do preparation and 2 reboots during update process (black background, small progress line in white and white apple logo) . this never happened to me before but I guess now I can tell one more story. As son as I will have a moment will also update to ios 16.

TL;DR: shutdown iphone, wait 5 seconds, restart iphone , upgrade to 15.7 and then really go drink a coffee and have a 30 mins walk :-)

Just thought I’d add some notes to getting past the issue for my iPhone 12 mini.

One other issue to note, was trying to update via iTunes, connected via the computer brought up another error message, stating I needed the latest version of iTunes. I checked that, and found I did have the latest version, so just fyi.

I cleared up 6GB of space, had auto updates off, and powered off my phone for ~ 2 minutes. Powered back on, and was able to install 15.7 via Wi-Fi. I did note some bugs, for example, I could not reply to an email, as hitting reply looped back to the email I wanted to respond to. So, I powered off the iPhone again, waited two minutes, powered it back on and was able to reply.

Thanks again for those that helped!
