The install fails every time after updating my iPhone 12 Pro Max to iOS 16 and Mac OS to 12.6. Any thoughts? The iPhone seems to connect without difficulty. However, this annoying message pops up EVERY TIME I connect my phone.

Xcode should now be available in the Apple App Store. I know it used to be through a developer account, but it seems to be available to anyone now. It's been so long since I installed it that I don't remember how I did the initial install, but I do update it now through the App Store.
One odd thing about Xcode, you need to install and actually run it to get everything installed. It adds files and extensions the first time it's run after an install or update.
I’ve been trying to restore an iPhone 12 Pro that’s going to be my work phone all day and every time I lock the restore button the dialogue box to install the software pops up. I say not now it all start’s over again.
Sorry to hear that, but definitely fixed at my end in the UK - I did absolutely nothing to achieve that so in the absence of a provable deity, I'm crediting Apple (though it shouldn't have happened in the first place).
I'm not running any system wide apps the block processes. No antivirals, ad-blockers,... Apple support did collect logs from my computer last week documenting the error message. Hopefully they will figure something out.
Interesting. I've been using migration assistant to transfer all of my old Macs to each of my new Macs for forever. I know that I had XCode installed at some point in the early OS X days. While there could potentially be hidden remnants somewhere, I can find no traces of it. I can't update and open something I can't see... Apple support had asked me if I had XCode installed, which could clearly be a piece of the puzzle. I told them exactly what I just typed above. Any thoughts about how to install/update XCode? The developer site apparently will not let me, a non-dev, download it. Is that something I should even mess with or wait for an Apple fix? Thoughts?
Most excellent. It's nice to know that you don't need to keep Xcode if you don't need it after the fix. It is a big app.
I've used AppCleaner and App Uninstaller to delete various apps.
Finally, my iMac is an M1. That may matter.
Apparently the 16.0.3 update contains several bug fixes and one bug.
I still have Xcode installed because I use it from time to time. I just updated my iPhone 12 mini to 16.0.3. I connected it again to my M1 iMac running Monterey 12.6 and still got no update warning message. For me the fix remains fixed.
I agree it's an annoyance.
I’m having the same problem. As it won’t stop you from backing up it sure will stop you from doing a restore.
Have you personally confirmed that?
It appears they are aware. Thing is I since it’s my work phone that I’m upgrading a 7 to my 12 Pro. Not many apps on it.
I got the same result. It’s a problem but I can just install the apps I need. It’s the first time in two years I connected an iPhone to my Mac
i will have to check again when I get home. But as of Wednesday it still didn’t install. iPhone 14 Pro running iOS 16.0.2 and MacBook Air M2 running MacOS 12.6.
Nope. Downloads and the install continues to fail. Apple has not fixed this yet.
I had a lengthy conversation with Apple Support shortly after my last reply. I will be working closer with them Wednesday of next week.
I may try that when I get home. Only one of those I am running would be antivirus. I use Sophos Home.
