apple watch podcast doesnt resume

My series 6 is on watchOS 9 and I was listening by bluetooth a podcast this morning during an "outdoor run" when the watch interrupted playback to say 1 mile at pace X:YY and then the podcast didn't resume on finishing. I tried play on the bluetooth but nothing. I'm finding using the watch during running pretty frustrating, the lack of testing is getting annoying. Yesterday on the old watchOS, I was running a loop and when my watch returned to wifi range (still running outside), the podcast switched to playing on my phone which was at home. Still about 1/4 mile from my house.
