Keynote won't create multiple columns

I'm trying to create a 2-column text field in Keynote 12.1.

I have an existing text box with text in it. I want to change it from a normal text box to a 2-column text box.

I have followed all of the instructions carefully. (Sidebar => Format => Text => Layout => Columns)

The field for number of columns is empty. When I click on the up arrow, no numbers appear. I can manually enter "2" into the number of columns field, then press Tab to enter that number, and the text box doesn't change.

I have tried this on several different text boxes in a couple of different Keynote files. Same thing every time.

Help!!! I appreciate any input or advice.

Hi Clinto,

It certainly looks like you're completing the correct steps to add a column. You can view those steps below or in the article here: Format text into columns in Keynote on Mac - Apple Support

"Format Columns of Text

  1. Click the shape or text box to select it.
  2. In the Format  sidebar, click the Text tab.
  3. Click the Layout button near the top of the sidebar, then click the arrows next to the Columns value field to add or remove columns.

To see more formatting options, click the disclosure arrow next to Columns.

Controls in the columns section for changing the number of columns and the width of each column."

As you've tested with multiple text boxes, test the alternative for adding columns found here: Add or remove rows and columns in Keynote on Mac

If the issue continues, test the issue in a new administrator user account. Find the steps to set that up here :Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support

Keep us posted on the results.

Best.
