Other volumes in container

Hi,

My MacBook Air has a hidden section named "Other Volumes in Container" and it is taking up a lot of storage space.

Is there any way I can delete that? I need that space to be available for storage

I would prefer if I do not have to reformat it.

The OS is ma OS Monterey

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.5

Terminal Application and below command without quotation marks

" diskutil list "

Output may look much like this below and that is very normal

Thanks a lot, I am not a tech person at all and hence not sure what is going on. I do not keep a lot of data on the computer anyway.

As per the breakdown

In Macintosh HD - Apps 33.93 GB, Documents 20.25 GB, Mac OS 15.42 GB, Music creation and others 3.41GB, System Data 122.22 GB and other volume in container is 175.16 GB.

As to what the Drive is, I have no clue.

I saw this only after an upgrade so not sure whether it is due to that. I haven't backed up with Time machine but have my data in external hard discs.

My issues are

  1. Can I free this space
  2. Should I downgrade to Big Sur? Will it go off then?
  3. Is it ok to go on without doing anything?

Thanks again Barney-15E

It's not hidden. Just select any of the other volumes. The space taken up by that volume will be shown, and all the rest will comprise "other volumes in container."

Is there any way I can delete that? I need that space to be available for storage

You would have to delete your data to make much space available. Normally, the largest portion of "other volumes in container" is your Data volume.

Thank you Barney-15E and P.Phillips.
So in essence, there is nothing much that can be done as the space is managed by macOS.

No, not at all.

Other Volumes in Container are exactly that, other volumes in the Container.

One of those other volumes, the one that takes up the most space, is your Data volume.

You need to offload some of your data to make space.

P. Phillips chaffed you off with the "Other" category instead of "Other Volumes in Container." They are not the same thing at all. "Other" storage is technically part of "Other Volumes in Container," but it is not what you asked about.
