Scrabble connection to internet

Can anyone advise on a problem I have in connecting to the internet on one specific program on my iPad, that being Scrabble. I am told that I cannot connect and this may result in "reduced functionality". I don't really want to be connected to the internet for Scrabble play: I prefer to use the iPad as a board that gets passed from player to player. Any ideas?
