External disk ejection warnings on Mac Studio

I've connected a Sandisk Extreme (v2) external SSD to my Mac Studio (M1 Max) via the Thunderbolt 4 ports in the back (which also support USB 3.1 gen 2). This is a bus powered external drive.

Upon awakening from sleep, I frequently get warnings about the external disk being ejected inappropriately. Despite that, when I check in Finder, the external drive is still, indeed, connected. Oddly, when I attach the external drive to one of the USB-C drives in the front of the Mac Studio, the disk ejection warnings seem to go away.

  1. Are there key differences between the front and back ports (other than Thunderbolt off course) that would cause the different behavior?
  2. Any way to use my external drive with the back Thunderbolt ports without out getting frequent disk ejection warnings?
  3. Although the back Thunderbolt ports support USB 3.1 (gen 2), I cannot find the USB version spec for the front USB-C ports (other than 10g/sec read). Anyone know?

Thanks for any advice.

Computer Sleep is known to cause issues with displays and drives, including crashing the system on wake…

It’s just an educated guess at this point, but I suspect that the rear ports are powering down at some point during computer sleep.

Try adjusting your Energy Saver preference setting as per the following screenshot and only allow the display(s) to turn off,

then only Sleep or Shutdown the Mac Studio at the end of each work day.
