battery runs out faster when using US iphone in England

i have iphone 3G from the US. when i charge the phone in england using my regular USB charger attached to an adapter that plugs into british type socket, my battery charges as usual. but when i use the phone, the battery runs out very quickly, about twice as fast if not more. i am not doing anything out of the ordinary with the phone and even have data and 3G turned off. perhaps it has something to do with the electrical voltage differences while charging between the US and UK?

3G, iPhone OS 3.1.2

It's not the "cell signal in the UK" but the signal conditions in your exact location. Weak signal conditions anywhere drains the battery faster since the phone has to put out a stronger signal to connect to the towers. Consider disabling 3G in settings.

Does your battery drain faster when not on calls or accessing data - i.e. standby or using apps? Do you have data roaming enabled?

If there is a problem charging your phone, the battery charge icon wouldn't reach 100% - I'm assuming from the fact that you didn't mention it that it does show full charge.

This is due to the exchange rate. Just as 1 USD is only 0.64£, one US hour is only 38 UK minutes...

Seriously, the Apple AC adaptor should function normally with UK voltage. Your phone, however may be discharging more rapidly for various reasons including the local cell signal. Try resetting your phone - press both home and sleep/wake buttons until the Apple logo appears.

BTW, if you jailbroke and unlocked your US (AT&T) iPhone to use in the UK, all bets are off.

i already tried resetting the phone at one point, it didn't fix the problem.

it is possible, but i find it difficult to believe the cell signal in the UK is more power hungry than in the US. otherwise, there would have been many complaints a long time ago from UK users as my iphone needs much more frequent re-charging now which is very annoying.

i did not jailbreak my iphone. i am using international roaming.

i figured out a way to test your theory though. i will try to charge the phone through my laptop's USB plug instead of the electrical socket and see if that solves the issue.

i'll post my findings soon..

Do you have Notifications turned on?
If you hacktivate the iphone, the keychain certificate is not installed for your carrier, and it will drain the battery making failed Push Notification connection attempts. Sometimes this is accompanied by Youtube not working, but this seemed to be fixed in the last year or so. Try restoring and activating properly in iTunes with with your usual SIM card already installed if you haven't already.
