Safari 16 on Monterey has black screen on video playback

Is there a fix for Monterey Safari 16 video playback issues? I get black screen but audio plays.

I had not tried the private window, so tried and it worked for about 4 seconds or so, but then went black with audio continuing.

The video works fine on Firefox, but would obviously prefer to use Safari.

Thanks

Thanks for the clarification, markbpcmac.

It was mentioned previously that you might want to ensure that you don't have any potential issues with browser extensions. You didn't mention checking that, so below, we'll detail how to check, and if that doesn't work, maybe even try a second user account, which might give you differing behavior.

The following info from Get extensions to customize Safari on Mac will help you check to see if any installed extensions are the cause of this:

"Manage your extensions

  1. In the Safari app  on your Mac, choose Safari > Preferences, then click Extensions.
  2. Do any of the following:
  • Turn an extension on or off: Select or deselect the extension’s checkbox.
    • Note: You get a warning if you turn on an extension that slows down browsing.
    • Change an extension’s settings: Select the extension, then select or deselect settings.
    • Remove an extension: Select the extension, then click Uninstall. Or, delete the app that contains the extension."

If everything is fine there and you only have one account, here's how you can create a test one:

"Add a user

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups .
  2. If the lock at the bottom left is locked , click it to unlock the preference pane.
  3. Click the Add button  below the list of users.
  4. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.
    • Administrator: An administrator can add and manage other users, install apps, and change settings. The new user you create when you first set up your Mac is an administrator. Your Mac can have multiple administrators. You can create new ones, and convert standard users to administrators. Don’t set up automatic login for an administrator. If you do, someone could simply restart your Mac and gain access with administrator privileges. To keep your Mac secure, don’t share administrator names and passwords.
    • Standard: Standard users are set up by an administrator. Standard users can install apps and change their own settings, but can’t add other users or change other users’ settings.
    • Sharing Only: Sharing-only users can access shared files remotely, but can’t log in to or change settings on the computer. To give the user permission to access your shared files or screen, you may need to change settings in the File Sharing, Screen Sharing, or Remote Management pane of Sharing preferences. See Set up file sharing and Share the screen of another Mac.

  1. For more information about the options for each type of user, click the Help button in the lower-left corner of the dialog.
  2. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.
  3. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
  4. Click Create User.
  5. Depending on the type of user you create, you can also do any of the following:
    • For an administrator, select “Allow user to administer this computer.”
    • For an administrator, select “Allow user to reset a password using Apple ID.”
    • Use Sharing preferences to specify whether the user can share your files and share your screen.

For information about Apple’s privacy policy, see the Apple Privacy Policy website.

If your Mac or Magic Keyboard has Touch ID, a new user can add a fingerprint after logging in to the Mac."

The previous info came from Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac.

Give these a try, and if nothing is helpful, it might be time to Get Support directly from Apple.

Take care.

Hello markbpcmac,

Ensuring you're able to load videos successfully in Safari is important and you've come to a great place for help. While the website loads but you're not seeing video, you'll want to complete the steps listed below. These steps are outlined in more detail via the following article and are specific to resolving issues with websites in Safari.

1.Reload the page
2.Check Safari extensions
3.Check Safari settings
4.Test with a private window
5.Install software updates
6.Check VPN or other security software
7.Check network settings
8.Resolve other issues

If Safari on Mac doesn't open a webpage or isn’t working as expected

Take care!

Thanks for providing that clarification markbpcmac,

Are you able to temporarily disable the Spectrum security software?

Another step you can try, is isolating by testing from safe mode.

Safe mode will temporarily disable non-essential software that loads at startup.

You can boot into safe mode, using the following steps:

Start up your Intel-based Mac in safe mode
1: Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key until you see the login window.
2: Log in to your Mac.
3: You might be asked to log in again.
4: On either the first or second login window, you should see “Safe Boot” in the menu bar.

Additional information about safe mode is available, here: Start up your Mac in safe mode

Report back with your results. What's learned can be used to plan the most relevant next steps.

Cheers!

I have no extensions installed in Safari yet, as this is a totally new build with Monterey with MS Office Suite installed.

I do have a Spectrum security software installed, but no security or any other extensions loaded in Safari yet.

I created the new account (standard user) and had the same results in a private window with video lasting about 4 seconds.

This is a iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2019) 3.6 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i3 with 8GB ram 1 TB drive.

I did check to make sure I can play a QuickTime movie with no problems.

Curious, is there a way to disable all or partial extensions at boot or would that affect the ability to play online video?

Thanks

I, too, upgraded to 12.6 and Safari 16 and immediately had issues in Safari. Though my issue was a bit different (movable graphics not loading correctly), I suspect the fix may be the same. Go to Develop>Experimental Features>WebGL via Metal - and simply uncheck WebGL via Metal. It's such a simple fix and worked for me. Good luck!

Well, I did try turning off "Web GL via metal" in experimental options with no luck with video, then I tried the "SafeBoot option" and noticed I lost the second monitor and when attempting to play video from Netflix, got the error saying I need to install Microsoft silverlight plugin. More history, perhaps not relevant but, I just got this Mac and had to replace the logic board to get it working again. Everything else works great on the Mac. So, I used to be able to find stuff in the logs that could shine some light on the error ,while painful, could be the next step.

Thanks
