Cannot update macbook air due to not enough free space, but I have more than 3x what it says I need

Trying to install the newest MacOS 12 update (12.6) on my 2020 M1 MacBook Air but cannot. Everytime I try to install I get a message reading "Your disk does not have enough free space. Updating requires 18.84 GB of disk space".

I currently, according to Finder and About This Mac, have 70.22 GB of free space.

Anyone have any ideas how to get around this?

Hi ErinIsADrunk,

There are several alternative options to pursue to isolate this behavior further. How to use safe mode on your Mac outlines tests to see if you can install while started into safe mode, as well as further steps to take depending on those results which can rule out possible conflicting software or setting conflicts preventing the installtion.

If the behavior continues, use Get Support to connect with AppleCare directly to explore this further.

Regards.
