FaceTime fails with "WiFi Connection Lost"

My Google skills haven't found any matches for this, but perhaps others have seen it in passing at least.

I've noticed recently that I've been having problems with FaceTime calls to a friend of mine. For the past month since he got his iPhone 4, he'd end up losing the WiFi connection, but now it's happening to me, too.

The symptom is that the FaceTime call will be going fine for a while, and then it will just hang with no motion in the picture from the other phone for about 10 seconds, then the phone will beep and display this error:

FaceTime Failed

WiFi Connection Lost

<OK>

At this point, I find that my WiFi indicator in the status bar is gone and replaced with "3G". It has indeed lost its connection to the WiFi access point (a Time Capsule).

Going into the iPhone's settings, I see that it shows there that it is still connected to my WiFi network (showing a checkmark next to my WiFi network name, although it still says "3G" at the top). Cycling WiFi off and back on corrects the problem.

My friend is also using his iPhone 4 connected to a Time Capsule, so we have similar setups. I'm beginning to wonder whether there's some problem either in iOS 4 or the Time Capsule that causes the wireless connection between them to disconnect in an aberrant fashion.

So, anyone else seen or heard of this?

Hi, same problem here in Germany. iphone 4 has no issues with Facetime, could easily do a 3 hr call via wireless router (TP-Link). A week ago I got the iphone 4s and after 10 secs Facetime the connection is lost, the router does not work anymore for any machine in the house and needs to be reset. OS5.0.1 and latest firmware. For a 650 EUR device that uses Facetime as a distiguishing feature that's quite poor 😟 Will try to call Apple Support to ask them for an update or fix...

I am having exactly the same problem (In England,UK)

At first, I thought it was a temperature issue (Routers restarting when its getting to hot).

However, I eliminated this problem by keeping it cool.

I have tried changing channels, altering network settings (E.G. DHCP/Static/ Port Forwarding) All not no avail.

The router is an Orange broadband box - Fairly new. - I also tried it on a Belkin wireless router - Same problem.

It's an absolute shamble that Apple have released the 4S with problems riddled like this. To show adverts on TV of Facetime actually working is a lie in itself.

Will NOT be purchasing Apple products again. The shephard has lost one of his sheep!

Update: Apple Support in Germany had not heard of this problem when I called them, their best suggestion was to reset the network settings of my iphone 4s, which did not help. I have bought a new wireless router (D-Link Dir-600). With that router facetime works fine again (e.g. 2 hrs call). Interestingly the new router also fixed my issue with VPN access to my companies network. I don't know what protocol Facetime uses but my guess is it's something like a VPN tunnel. In iphone 4s they must have changed part of that protocol which makes it incompatible to some "older" routers. Why do they do such a thing beats me...

Guys,I have my own solution. I am having exactly the same problem with my brand new Iphone4s(I am in Guangzhou, China),and then I tired my friend's facetime in his Iphone4, it could work very well,it is obvious some problom of this new 4S.I check My WiFi router setup menu,I found my router is using 8011.g protocol which just supports 54Mbs transferring, and I check Iphone4s technical document which said it uses a brand new inter-EthernetCard that support 14Mb data transferring (Iphone 4 just support 7Mb).For that reason ,I bought a new Wifi Router which support new 801.1N protocol , and it can transfer 300Mbs to sustitude the old one, finally, the connection problem is fix,no more offline,

So,Before Apple give the solution,we have to buy a new Wifi router( which support 801.1N 300Mbs) to use facetime in 4S! By the way, I hate upgrate, the old router is complimentary with the internet Contract. But now , I have to spend more on it for the cutting edge....

seems that the issue is not reasoned by speed but by your firewall settings.

I expirience the sa,e problem and CALL INSIDE MY LOCAL NETWORK WORKS. But I can not configure my router and even don't figure out how. I didn't change anything, so where the problem arise from? Only seems from some update which changed networks requirements. Or probably my ISP changed something, but i do not believe it.

Same problem here. My wife and I both have the iPhone 4S with the latest firmware and we're using a Linksys EA4500 — 900mhz wireless N — which is the best there currently is. Whether we use A, B, G or N, Facetime causes both our phones to lose their wireless connection and often our computers as well. This only started happening within the last month.
