Recipients name appears in blue when wrote in an iMessage

Just wonder if anyone can help me with this question please ?

Since updating to iOS 16, when I am sending an iMessage to one of my contacts and type their name in the message by selecting the middle predictive text choice (see the screenshot with the three suggestions shown in the predictive text area).

Their name (in the text body of the message) changes to blue and the recipient tells me it is blue when they read it. I cannot for the life of me understand what this feature is or what it is supposed to be for, and wondered if it’s possible to switch this feature off. I know it’s only started happening with iOS 16.

Thanks.

Hello Tal71,

We woud like to see how we can help with a contact's name being blue in Messages. This is considered a mention when you type a contacts name, then tap the name when it appears. For more information visit: Reply to specific messages on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

"How to use mentions

  1. Open a Messages conversation.
  2. Type a contact's name, then tap the name when it appears. Or type @ followed by their name.

Depending on your contact's settings, a mention can notify them even if they've muted the conversation. To change this notification setting, go to Settings > Messages, then turn Notify Me on or off."

Cheers!

Or right I see. It's just I thought it was a new feature/setting that had been introduced with iOS 16, as previous I didn't see this.

So if I didn't want to mention the person (by selecting their name/contact by tapping on the middle predictive text box) I would simply continue typing their name in full and tapping on the left most predictive text box, whereby then it would just insert their name, and it would not be in blue and as such not classed as a mention?

Thanks very much for the help, much appreciated :)
