how to wipe clean for recycling mac from early 2009. forgot apple id. doesn't show APFS in Macintosh hard drive

I have backed up and taken everything off. iTunes is still signed in but with the old password. i can sign onto the computer, but don't have the admin password. just want to wipe it clean and recycle. all online guides I find lead me to a dead end.

closest was...powered on holding command+R. chose disk utility, got to Erase but then it said chose APFS and that's not offered.
