CarPlay

This may not be the correct venue for this question but the internet will no longer yield results based on my search input parameters. It just goes to whatever ad is relevant to words in it. So I figured I’d ask other Apple users who might know. Is “built-in CarPlay” a radio/head unit/infotainment feature, or is it a wiring feature in the vehicle itself? The reason I ask is I have purchased a new tablet style system to install and before it arrives I guess I should know whether or not I will need to purchase some extra hardware.

thanks in advance

Yes. CarPlay is a feature built into the head unit which is why some cars have it while others don’t (although it’s becoming pretty standard in vehicles now). If you’re asking if there are other parts to it that connect to the head unit to make it work….most likely but you can’t make a non-CarPlay ready head unit suddenly become a CarPlay head unit.

Are you trying to convert your current head unit that isn’t CarPlay ready? You would need to buy an aftermarket head unit that is ready or find an OEM model for your car that had CarPlay and see if it can be installed without a lot of hassle. There are adaptors to try and add wireless CarPlay to a head unit that already allowed wired CarPlay but they seem to be inconsistent…with some finding that they don’t work at all. Unless I am completely misunderstanding what you’re trying to accomplish.

I thought as much. When I ripped out my factory head unit I realized there is a mini usb cable that runs from the usb adapter in the car to a certain port on the back and that’s what enabled car play from that usb and not the other. One would think that a new tablet style radio with custom trim to replace my dash bezel would come standard with CarPlay and/or android auto, but I’m not seeing anything in the description to suggest such. It hasn’t come in yet so I’m currently unable to find out, and the seller is too busy apparently to answer my questions about a $1200 radio I just ordered from them. Thank you for the direct and enlightening answer!
