iPhone system data blew up after iOS 16.0.1 and new iphone 14 pro

Yesterday, my 512 GB iphone 14 Pro notified me that it was out of memory. I went to General > Settings > iphone storage and found that system data was hogging up all of my free memory.

I cleared some of the data from photos, iTunes, messages, and I also cleared my safari cache. It didn’t make much of a difference.

I then decided to do a force restart of my iphone (volume up, volume down, hold the shut down key).

Interestingly enough, this took care of the problem temporarily. The next morning, system data was again hogging up all of my resources. I repeated the force restart and system data was cleared once again. I have attached screenshots of my before and after the force restart.

Is this a bug? Could it be one of my apps that is not compatible with iOS 16.01?

This is before the force restart:

Hi Witch City Duncan,

You can follow the steps under "Use the Finder or iTunes to check the storage on your iOS device" in How to check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to see if it might give you some additional insight to what is going on.

Ultimately, if this behavior persists after restarting and you are fully up to date, Contact Apple Support or use this Get Support link for assistance as you've completed all the troubleshooting steps you can do on your end.

Take care.

Hello TheLittles,

Thanks for the tip! I did a factory reset of my iphone and restored from my iPhone backup on iCloud…unfortunately the problem remains. So far the only solution that helps temporarily is for me to do the hard restart (volume up, volume down, off). This will clear the system data bloat but it will creep up until my entire 512 GB is full with “system data”. Usually this happens within 8-12 hours.

Restore Through a Hard Drive TMB:

You need to create a Time Machine Backup on an external drive, and then restore from that. iCloud is not an option for this.

Less, thank you.

So here is my update: During this entire episode, I noticed that Apple Music was always running and downloading or streaming in the background. It was the top app in both cellular data use and power consumption.

This also explains why my iPhone battery would be at 20% way too early in the day.

When I investigated, Apple Music was constantly downloading a movie that I purchased in iTunes. But it would never finish. I deleted the download and it started downloading another movie I had purchased. I deleted this second movie. Both movies were purchased on iTunes years ago.

I also opened the Apple TV app to check what purchased movies had been downloaded. I had about 8 movies, and all had completed downloading.

12 hours later, no more movies are being downloaded in Apple Music.

As for my storage problem, so far, things are remaining stable with over 300 GB remaining free on my 512 GB iPhone. System data remains low.

I’ll touch base again if the problem returns.
