IOS 16 iMessages - unable to mark unread

I am in the United Kingdom. My 2 family members and I have all updated our iPhones (8, 11 and 13 mini) to IOS 16.0. None of us are able to mark iMessages as unread by either swiping right or long-press. The long-press menu doesn’t include anything to do with the message being able to mark it unread.

Is this a region problem or do we have to switch it on?

Grateful for any help here.

Hi kareng12

Had a chat session with Apple and everything is now sorted, thank you.

The problem lay in the fact that I thought that you could mark individual messages as unread, but it's only the entire conversation.

Thanks for all the help. Case closed!

Hi Kevin_Frost,

If you haven't done so yet, try some of the other methods for marking messages as unread from this article: Keep track of conversations in Messages on iPhone

Mark messages as unread

You can mark conversations as unread so you can return to them later when you have time to respond.

In the Messages list, swipe right on a conversation to mark it as unread. Or drag right and tap the Mark as Unread button.

To see a list of your unread messages, you must first turn on Filtering. Go to Settings > Messages, scroll down to Message Filtering, then turn on Filter Unknown Senders.

Tip: You can also mark several messages as unread at once. Tap the More Options button, tap Select Messages, select the conversations you want to mark as unread, then tap Unread in the bottom-left corner.

If those steps don't help, restart your devices and try again. This may seem like a simple step, but it can correct some issue.

Best regards.
