i keep trying to download free apps, but every time I press download a screen pops up that says “ verification required” and tries to make me add a payment method for no reason. Why is it trying to get me to add a payment method and how do I get it to go away?

Unless you have a NONE option in the payment methods, you usually have to have a valid payment method entered in your account details. Even for free apps, redownloads or to update apps.
